তিন প্রফেই ফার্স্ট ও দশটা অনার্স পেয়েছিলেন মেধাবী ডাঃ রাফিদ আহমেদ

তিন প্রফেই ফার্স্ট হব দশটা অনার্স সহ, কখনো ভাবিনি। প্রফে যে ফার্স্ট হওয়া যায় এটাই জানতাম না।
মেডিকেলে আসার আগে অবশ্য কখনোই নিয়মিত ফার্স্ট হতাম না। স্কুলে ক্লাস সেভেন পর্যন্ত টানা ফার্স্ট হয়েছিলাম, তারপরে আর হইনি। আসলে ডিএমসি তে যারা আসে, তারা সবাই যে যার স্কুলে ফার্স্ট হওয়া, কিন্তু এখানে এসে সবাই কেমন যেন ঘুমিয়ে যায়। ভাবে এমনিতেই সব হয়ে যাবে। সেক্ষেত্রে আমি স্রোতের বিপরীতে ছিলাম, ডিএমসিতে এসে যতখানি পড়াশুনা করেছি, তেমনটা আগে কখনো করিনি।

প্রথম আইটেমটা আমার জন্য টার্নিং পয়েন্ট ছিল। দশে আট পেয়েছিলাম। জীবনে প্রথমবারের মতো মনে হয়েছিল, ভালো করা এতো সহজ! প্রথম পরীক্ষা ছিল থোরাক্স কার্ড। এই কার্ডেও ফার্স্ট হলাম। আমার মধ্যে উৎসাহ চলে আসল, এরপর আর পিছনে ফিরে তাকাতে হয়নি। মেডিকেলের আর কোন পরীক্ষায় সেকেন্ড হই নাই, পরম করুণাময় আল্লাহর অশেষ রহমতে সবগুলো প্রফ সহ সব পরীক্ষায় ফার্স্ট হলাম।

একসময় মনে হতো, ফার্স্ট না হয়ে একটু সেকেন্ড থার্ড হই। হতে পারতাম না, ফার্স্টই হতাম। বিরক্ত লাগতো, কারন একটা সময়ের পর সবার প্রত্যাশাকে বোঝা মনে হত। পরীক্ষা দিতে গেলে সবাই বলতেন, তুমি তো ফার্স্ট, পরীক্ষা শুরুই হতো কঠিন প্রশ্ন দিয়ে।

আসলে সব পড়ুয়া স্টুডেন্ট ভালো স্টুডেন্ট হতে পারে না, কারণ পরীক্ষা দেয়াটাও একটা আর্ট। মেডিকেলের পরীক্ষাগুলো নাটকের মতো, পরীক্ষার্থী সেখানে অভিনেতা, রোগী সাইড অভিনেতা আর পরীক্ষক দর্শক। নাটক কোনটা দেখতে ভালো লাগে? যেটাতে সাউন্ড কম, সংলাপ একঘেয়ে, অভিনেতা সংলাপ ভুলে যায়, বার বার থেমে যায়, অপ্রাসংগিক কথা বলে, সেটা? না যেটাতে অভিনেতা তার অভিনয় দিয়ে প্রাণবন্ত করে তুলে, সেটা? ভালো করতে হলে তাই পরীক্ষা নামক নাটকের স্ক্রিপ্ট জানতে হবে। বার বার রিহার্স করতে হবে। প্রশ্নগুলো জানতে হবে, সিলেবাস জানতে হবে, কিভাবে ডেলিভারি করতে হয় জানতে হবে, পারফর্ম করতে হবে।

তবে তোমাকে জীবনে সবার সেরা হতে হবে, এমন কোন কথা নেই। বরং সহজ জীবনযাপন কর, জীবনে সুখী থাকো। এভারেস্টের চূড়ায় তোমাকে উঠতে হবে না, উঠে শান্তি পাবে না, দেখবে একা লাগছে। তারচেয়ে বন্ধুবান্ধব নিয়ে, পরিবার পরিজন নিয়ে রাঙামাটি ঘোরা অনেক ভালো। আমি বিশ্বাস করি একজন ডক্টর কখনো দেশের ভবিষ্যৎ হতে পারে না। পুরো দেশকে সেবা দিবে একটা ডাক্তার সমাজ। তাই অন্য ডাক্তারের প্রতি সাহায্যের হাত বাড়িয়ে দাও, একটা সমাজ বানিয়ে ফেল। একা উঠে লাভ নেই, সবাইকে নিয়ে উঠো।

অর্থ অনর্থের মূল কিন্তু অর্থহীণতা আরো বড় অনর্থ ডেকে আনে। তাই এমবিবিএস পাশ করে কেউ বেকার থেকো না। টুকটাক কাজ করো। মেডিসিনের ডক্টরদের ক্রিটিকাল কেয়ারের কাজ জানলে অনেক সুবিধা। পোস্টগ্রাজুয়েশন  করো যত তাড়াতাড়ি সম্ভব। পোস্টগ্রাড শেষ করলে দেখবে তোমার স্যাররা তোমাকে উনাদের পাশে বসাবেন। উনাদের পাশে দাঁড়িয়ে সেলফি অনেকেই তুলতে পারবে, কিন্তু উনাদের পাশে বসার মতো যোগ্য হতে চাইলে দ্রুত পোস্ট গ্রাড কর।

আমার ইন্টার্নশিপ যেদিন শেষ হল, তার পরদিনই এক ডাক্তার বড়ভাইকে মারল ডি ইউ এর ছেলেরা। কষ্ট পেয়েছিলাম এই ঘটনায়, ভেবেছিলাম, দেশে থাকবো না। এম আর সি পি করলাম, কমনওয়েলথ স্কলারশিপ ও পেয়েছি। কিন্তু ইসমাইল স্যার, প্রাণগোপাল স্যার, দ্বীন মোহাম্মদ স্যার সবাই আমাকে জোর করলেন দেশে থেকে যাওয়ার জন্য। অনেকটা পথ পাড়ি দেয়ার পর এখন বুঝি, আমি জন হপকিন্সের প্রফেসরও হতে চাই না, ইংল্যান্ডের কন্সাল্ট্যান্টও হতে চাই না। আমার স্বপ্ন বাংলাদেশের মেডিসিনের অধ্যাপক হওয়া। এদেশে থাকতে চাই, এদেশের মেডিকেল স্টুডেন্টদেরকে পড়াতে চাই, এইটাই আমার স্বপ্ন।

I never thought I would stand first in all three professional examinations with honours in 10 subjects. In fact, I didn't know you could stand first in prof at all.

I never used to stand first consistently before coming to DMC. Though I was the first boy at school up to class seven, after that I never stood first. Actually all the first boys from different schools of the country end up in DMC, but after coming here, they all fall asleep. They lose interest and think that they will be doctors anyway, doesn’t matter if they study or not. But I was different. I studied harder than ever after coming here.

My first ever item was the turning point of my life. I got eight out of ten. For the first time in my life, I thought, it is so easy to get good marks! I stood first in thorax card too; it was my first official exam here. It made me like my studies even more. After that, I never looked back. I never stood second from then on. By the grace of Allah I stood first in every examination including all of the professional examinations.

Sometimes I wanted to stand second or third. But I used to stand first anyway. It annoyed me, the burden of expectation. Whenever I attended any exam, the examiners used to say,” you are the first boy”, and they used to start with difficult questions.

Not every studious student can be a good student, because attending an examination is an art itself. Examinations in medical science is more like a drama, where the student is an actor, the patient is a side actor, and teachers are the audience. Which Drama is more enjoyable? The one with faulty sound, monotonous irrelevant dialogue? or the one that the actor makes it lively with his acting? So you have to know the script of this drama and reharse it again and again. You have to know the questions, the syllabus, how to deliver the things you have studied and how to perform well.

But it is not necessary to be the best or the most successful person. Rather lead a simple life, be happy. You don't have to mount the Everest, even if you do, chances are that you will find yourself all alone there. Travelling Rangamati with friends and family is so much better than that. I believe a single doctor can never be the future of a country. We need thousands of doctors to serve the total population. So extend a helping hand to your fellow doctors, make it a community. It won't matter if you succeed alone, make it a group success.

It is said that money is the reason of all bad things, but I believe poverty brings out worse things in life. So don't stay unemployed once you have passed the MBBS examination. Work, even if it is not that big job you always wanted to do. Knowing the management of critical patients goes a long way for medicine specialist. Get a post graduation degree as early as possible. Once you have completed your post Graduation, you will find yourself sitting beside your teachers. Many students can take a selfie with their mentors and teachers but not everyone get to sit beside them. Complete your post graduation as soon as you can, so you can be worthy enough to sit beside them.

A senior DMCan was injured by some students of Dhaka University the day after I completed my internship. I was so hurt by this incident that I deciced to settle abroad. I completed my MRCP, got chosen for Common wealth Scholarship too. But Ismail sir, Prangopal sir, Din Mohammad sir everyone requested me to stay here at Bangladesh. After a long journey that I took, now I realize I don't want to be a professor of Jhon Hopkins's or a consultant in England. I want to live here in my country, treat the people here, teach the young to-be-doctors here. If u ask me if I have a dream, yes I do have one, my dream is to be a professor of medicine here in Bangladesh.
